Cinematic OV-1 Architecture Innovation

Transforming dense military architecture documents into cinematic experiences that accelerate understanding across the defense enterprise.

01The Challenge

Department of Defense operational architecture products — particularly OV-1 overview views — suffer from ever-increasing levels of complexity, taking the form of static, highly complicated graphics crowded with technical text. These legacy assets overload viewers with information, are difficult to comprehend without supplemental briefings, and fail to engage modern audiences accustomed to dynamic, visual storytelling.

As the Army modernizes its capabilities and forces, the Futures and Concepts Center (FCC) needed a fundamentally better way to communicate complex future force operations and capability integrations across the Army's Cross Functional Teams, Centers of Excellence, Capability Development Integration Directorates, and the broader Army Modernization Enterprise.

02How We Accelerated

JANUS identified the opportunity and took the initiative — collaborating across our virtual training, cinematic production, and serious gaming development teams to pioneer a new category of architecture product.

Our team developed an enhanced OV-1 approach focused on reducing text and emphasizing visual storytelling, graphical composition, and 3D modeling with advanced lighting and visual effects. We then pushed the state-of-the-art further: transforming static OV-1s into fully narrated cinematic experiences combining 2D/3D animations, video, motion graphics, and effects.

The first cinematic JANUS produced for Maneuver Support CDID synthesized hundreds of pages of dense technical documentation into an engaging three-minute animated narrative — successfully passing through the AFC-FCC Entry Gate process on the first attempt. This innovation combined 3D graphics, Computer Aided Design (CAD) modeling, and motion design with established concept and architecture development expertise.

03The Result

JANUS has since delivered multiple animated and enhanced 3D OV-1s for numerous organizations — briefing military leadership, DoD contractors, military conferences, U.S. politicians, and allied partners from around the world.

The cinematic OV-1 model puts operational situations, capabilities, and scenarios into context more effectively than any static product, providing organizations a tool to achieve rapid conceptual understanding while making complex defense content engaging and accessible for military and non-military audiences alike.

JANUS continues to advance the state-of-the-art, with new cinematic architecture products in development including "Set the Theater" — focusing on how future Maneuver Support capabilities will set conditions for Theater Opening during a campaign.

From script development and graphics/video editing to project supervision, this has been a very complicated process. I want you to know that we at MS-CDID are ecstatic with the final result. Fantastic product, great people, professional support, and an end result that is best described as stunning and epic.
