JANUS Team Member Douglas Turner Celebrates 10 Years
09/02/2025
Principal Engineer Douglas "Doug" Turner is celebrating his 10th anniversary with JANUS Research Group's (JANUS') AER Business Unit.
Doug started with AER in September 2015 as a Senior Software Engineer. Over the last 10 years, Doug has proven to be a consummate team player, demonstrating that his knowledge and ability to contribute across the company truly know no bounds. Doug has served as the technical lead for all programs out of AER's Target Recognition and Advanced Exploitation (TRAX) division including Air Force Research Laboratory's (AFRL's) Passive Radio Frequency Identification Environment (PRIDE) and Multisource Analytics Development and Evaluation (MAD-E) programs, and a program with the Strategic Capabilities Office (SCO) that extended the division's capabilities into a new operational domain. The success of these programs is directly attributable to Doug's pursuit of innovative solutions to technical challenges that not only address the current challenge but also result in recognition for always looking toward the future by establishing the groundwork to address the next challenge.
Leveraging his foundational knowledge in the sciences and more than 20 years of background and experience in automated sensor data exploitation, Doug is currently turning his attention toward the domain of space. The space domain presents its own challenges, and Doug is tackling those challenges head-on as he leads an effort to establish JANUS as a provider of the capabilities required to perform space-based detection and tracking of adversarial missiles traveling through the upper atmosphere and space. He is meeting this new challenge with his customary intellect, dedication, and resourcefulness. He also recognizes that when dedicated individuals who thrive on a culture of developing solutions to difficult real-world challenges are brought together true innovation occurs and challenges are overcome. Thus, in addition to engineering technical solutions to challenging problems, he also recognizes that communication and collaboration within the team are also part of the solution.
Doug's contributions over the past 10 years have influenced the success of many programs and in many cases the initial award and success of those programs was enabled by his most notable achievement. That achievement was the development of a rapid target prediction capability named RAPTOR. RAPTOR generates synthetic target signatures to perform target recognition and generate synthetic data to train AI models. RAPTOR's success has also supported the diversification of capabilities provided by the TRAX division.
Doug always perseveres, no matter the obstacles. His dedication to his work and his customers has been recognized through company awards such as 2016 Employee of the Quarter, Q2; 2018 Employee of the Year; 2020 Outstanding Team Service (TRAX Division); and 2024 Employee of the Year. Equally notable as the accolades he so justly earned from the company is the fulfillment he experiences from enriching the lives of the many who have known him and been inspired by him.
During Doug's time with JANUS, he has experienced some memorable personal rewards resulting from his contributions that will stay with him for life. When Doug first joined the AER team, he was concluding a program for which he had served as the longtime lead system integrator at his previous employer. All that remained to declare success was a final flight demonstration, employing an MQ-9 Reaper. Given Doug's central role on the program, a contract was established for him to support the demonstration. Observing the Reaper taking to the skies above March Air Reserve Base may be the stuff of memories, but the deep appreciation for the culmination of years of hard work developing a cutting-edge capability and bringing it to its successful conclusion was also a personal reward.
Doug credits Charles Sarkisian, head of JANUS' TRAX Division, as his biggest mentor. "Charlie has emphasized the importance of a cohesive team for solving difficult problems," Doug says, "and strong teams depend on each member acting with integrity, honesty, and a strong work ethic to build trust within the team." Doug has taken that to heart, being a mentor through both word and action to those who have had the pleasure to work with him. Having tackled many difficult challenges throughout his professional career, Doug has accumulated knowledge and wisdom that span both the technical and life's lessons. For example, so as not to get overwhelmed by difficult problems, Doug advises that they can usually be broken into smaller, more manageable pieces whose results should be verified in order to identify the work that needs to be accomplished next.
It is no wonder, then, that when not hard at work at JANUS, Doug's personal aspirations mirror who he is at work. He is dedicated to his family and community, aspiring to be a helpful member of his community and a supportive husband and father who sees his family thrive. He enjoys being outdoors. Whether he is hiking, boating, or photographing the world around him, Doug recharges from his time spent outdoors. Still, when he has to be inside, you can often find him reading, typically science fiction or mystery novels.
One fun fact that many may not know is that Doug was given the opportunity to drive an M113 Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) while supporting a flight test event that was taking place at a military training facility. This was a memorable event for Doug, given that after many years of detecting and tracking M113 APCs in airborne image data he was finally able to experience being at the controls of one and driving it himself.
Please join all of us at JANUS in wishing Doug Turner a very happy 10th anniversary. We cannot wait to see what the future holds.
