JANUS' Dr. Cordula Robinson to Present Paper at I/ITSEC 2025

09/17/2025

JANUS Research Group (JANUS) is attending December's Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation, and Education Conference (I/ITSEC) held in Orlando, Fla., where its very own Dr. Cordula Robinson, Ph.D. will present a paper titled, "Space Weather AI into Warfighter Kill Chains Toward Operational Dominance." The paper explores efforts to develop a first-generation prototype software for an artificial intelligence (AI) system that can monitor space hazards through predictive mapping.

Created through JANUS' AER Business Unit, the prototype addresses the growing concerns surrounding the increasing congestion of space. Every year approximately $1.2 billion is lost in satellites alone. Add to this the loss of intelligence, broadband capabilities, and even human life and the problems of space—weather, hazards, and crowding—become increasingly important for both the military and commercial industries to consider and address. Dr. Robinson, who joined AER a few years ago after spending three decades advancing deep learning/AI approaches for space applications, understood that space congestion combined with military and intelligence concerns needed a solution capable of diagnosing and mitigating space hazards in real time. Her team's response is the Space Anomaly AI Nextgen Tool (SAAINT), a first-of-its-kind AI application for both Department of Defense (DOD) and commercial use.

At I/ITSEC, Dr. Robinson will present the initial findings of her team's efforts, with particular emphasis on how the system can be tailored to meet warfighter space weather needs. Her research has been conducted in conjunction with the Air Force Research Laboratory with the need to create a prototype capable of diagnosing, predicting, and responding to space environment threats in real time. Especially given that by 2030 more than 100,000 satellites alone are projected to be orbiting Earth, this first proof of concept is highly encouraging.

Learn more about the foundational steps that could lead from a promising prototype to a real space asset. We invite you to come hear about Dr. Robinson's research and its real-world applications when she presents her paper at I/ITSEC on Tuesday, December 2, at 2 p.m. Dr. Robinson will be presenting with the Emerging Concepts and Innovative Technology group in Room 320A. Feel free to also stop by JANUS' booth (#1184) to learn more about how we are developing tomorrow's answers today.
