Boldly Going Where Technology Leads

10/06/2025

As we near the annual Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation, and Education Conference (I/ITSEC) held in Orlando, Fla. the first week of December, JANUS Research Group (JANUS) is taking a moment to shine a spotlight on some of the industry-leading solutions we're developing. One such technology has implications for future space training and simulation, aimed at enabling today's warfighters to train in realistic space weather conditions.

The JANUS Space Weather for Training and Simulation (SWFTS) technology is an extension of the Environmental Data Cube Support System (EDCSS), a data management platform bridging ocean and atmospheric science to realistic mission impacts. SWFTS will deliver a high-fidelity characterization of the modern space environment, helping to improve realism in communications, reconnaissance, targeting, and other critical mission areas across live, virtual, and constructive (LVC) simulations.

At JANUS, we believe that we fight as we train, so we should train as we fight. The weather always gets a vote in military operations, and we believe that simulation training should reflect that environment—the geography, the time of year, and the physics from the bottom of the ocean to the sun. SWFTS will deliver realistic impacts in training and simulation models, pushing the state of the science to the forward edge of battle in LVC, and helping to train our warfighters to meet 21st century, near-peer challenges.

With the advent of air power, the race to air superiority has clearly been dominated by the United States, but with recent advancements the gap between the United States and its competitors has significantly narrowed. There is a real need to get cyber and space forces ready for a situation they haven't yet faced. But space is tricky. Solar flares and other natural events, equipment malfunctions, and the increasingly crowded arena create a unique environment that requires new tools and technology to effectively prepare our defense capabilities. JANUS' SWFTS is the answer.

For more information on SWFTS and how JANUS can create solutions to your space environment needs, visit us at I/ITSEC Booth #1184 December 1–4. We look forward to seeing you there.
