JANUS History Program

"Official records of the US Army are of enduring significance and indispensable for ensuring complete, accurate, and objective accounting of the Army's activities to the American people. I expect leaders to make the preservation of official records a matter of personal interest."

- Former Secretary of the Army Francis J. Harvey dated 22 February 2005

JANUS believes that preservation of our nation's history and supporting the involvement of all branches of the United States Armed Forces in the Global War on Terror is critical to the future of our country.

Since being awarded a multi-year contract with the U.S. Army Signal Center Miitary History Office to document Signal participation in the Global War on Terror, the JANUS Historical Collection Team has collected, compiled, and archived a large volume of anthological matter to enhance the historical record and to help develop lessons learned for the benefit of future deployments.

JANUS provides exceptional working experience for archival, anthological, and compilation projects of various sizes, scopes, and geographical locations. Recent collection and documentation accomplishments include:

  • Created 107 archival boxes to preserve collected information
  • Collected 89 AARs, 59 Lessons Learned, and 108 Command Histories

Historical Data Collection Team

A JANUS Historical Collection Team is composed of a Military Branch History Specialist and an Historian as well as support services personnel.

We provide exceptional expertise for archival, anthological, compilation, and analysis projects of various sizes and scopes in numerous geographical locations.

Our teams travel extensively across the military to conduct personal video interviews of service members, DOD civilians and contractors. Our production team processes the videos into DVD format and also provides thoroughly reviewed and edited transcripts.

Without a formal collection policy to guide decisions, collections tend to grow haphazardly. Records require special storage considerations, as they exist in a variety of shapes and sizes and are sometimes irreplaceable. Our teams research documents in response to requests for historical data as well as organizing the planning and conducting of surveys of records for retention. They also provide advice to the command historians concerning historical matters
All printed matter collected by JANUS teams are digitized, registered, and preserved in accordance with generally accepted archival procedures.

Our teams select materials based on a variety of criteria, including:

  • Demonstrated/perceived community interest, need/demand by the command historian and users
  • Contemporary significance or permanent value
  • Relevant experience and contributions of diverse populations in the Global War on Terror
  • Quality, including accuracy, clarity, and usability
  • Significance of the data
  • Relation to existing collection

Historical analysis is a fundamental tool of archival research and our teams spend considerable time analyzing each unit and operation to develop lessons learned for the benefit of future deployments and to enhance the historical record. Our teams develop special studies on various aspects of Signal Operations in the Global War on Terror.
Our teams also coordinate military history education activities and briefs of GWOT issues to community groups and schools

Military records document command decisions, assist historical research and lessons learned, and serve to safeguard the rights and interests of the armed forces, our service men and women, and veterans.

Historians must be able to research the location and activities of units and Soldiers involved in combat and contingency operations. Make JANUS your choice.

Units that are remembered document their experiences. Those that don't are forgotten by history.
